How Pharma Hiring Works in Pakistan — The MR to AM Ladder

Every Medical Representative opening on this board exists because somewhere a territory fell vacant or a company decided to grow. Understanding how pharma companies hire — who interviews you, why the vacancy opened, and what the next rung looks like — tells you how to apply, whom you will actually work for, and how fast your career can move. Here is the system from the inside.

🧬 The ladder, rung by rung

📍 Why territories fall vacant

A vacancy is a story. The previous rep resigned (the most common reason — reps move for better packages and territories), was promoted, or the company created a new territory by splitting a large one or launching a new product line. Expansion vacancies are the best seats: a new territory has no legacy problems, and a launch team gets management attention. A territory that falls vacant again and again in a year is a warning sign — ask the outgoing rep's story politely during your interview if you can.

📝 Who actually interviews you

In most Pakistani pharma companies, hiring is manager-led. Your first and most important interview is with the Area or Regional Sales Manager you would report to — he is judging whether he can work a territory with you. HR usually enters later, for documentation, degree verification, and the offer letter. In multinationals and top nationals, expect a longer chain: a screening interview, sometimes a short written test of science and English, a second interview with the Zonal or National Sales Manager, and only then HR. The manager interview decides; the rest confirms.

📌 What each promotion really requires

📝 How to use this when you apply

Apply to the rung you can prove, not the rung you want. A fresh graduate applying to TM seats wastes everyone's time; an MR with three years above 100% who keeps applying to MR seats undersells himself. When a listing on MrJobs names a designation, match your CV's first lines to it — designation, segment, territory — because the first-line manager who reads it is scanning for exactly those three things. Our interview guide covers what he will ask, and the salary guide covers what each rung pays.

📍 Insider Tip: The fastest climbers treat every territory like a business they own — they know their top doctors, their chemists' stock, and their numbers without opening a file. Managers promote the rep they would trust with their own old territory.
